The IDC funds projects rather than small working-capital needs: a new plant, a mine expansion, a renewable-energy project, a hotel, a film slate. Funding starts around R1 million and can run into the billions, structured as senior debt, equity, quasi-equity or a mix. Repayment terms are flexible, with moratoriums so a project can reach cash flow before servicing debt.

Dedicated windows exist for youth-owned businesses, women-owned businesses, black industrialists (often alongside the dtic's BIS grant), and energy projects. The IDC also administers several dtic grant schemes, including SPII.

Who qualifies

South African-registered company with a bankable project in an IDC sector; economic merit and job creation; owners contribute risk capital; environmental and social compliance.
