SPII pays a share of the direct cost of turning an idea into a working, tested prototype: engineering hours, materials, tooling, testing and certification. Small businesses get 50% to 85% of qualifying costs depending on size and ownership; larger firms a lower share. The programme is administered by the IDC on the dtic's behalf.
It is not for research: the concept must already be proven and the outcome must be a product or process that can be manufactured in South Africa. Applications are assessed by technical evaluators.
