Named after the struggle hero, the fund pays tuition, accommodation, meals, books and a living allowance for the full duration of an undergraduate qualification at a public institution. It targets students who do well at school but whose families cannot pay and who fall outside NSFAS.

Applications open once a year, usually between September and November for the following academic year, and are announced on nyda.gov.za.

Who qualifies

South African citizen aged 18 to 35 with a strong matric (or in matric with strong results), household income within the fund's threshold, accepted or applying to a public university or TVET college.
