Sectors
The Technology Development Fund takes over where the Seed Fund stops. It funds SMMEs, start-ups, universities and science councils to build demonstrators and pilot plants, obtain certification, and prove the economics of a technology so that it becomes attractive to commercial investors.
TIA co-funds; applicants usually contribute cash or in-kind. A Commercialisation Support Fund follows for market samples, market testing and regulatory approvals at readiness levels 8 to 9.
Who qualifies
South African SMME, start-up, higher education institution or science council with a technology at TRL 4–7 and a credible route to market.
How to apply
Follow the application process on tia.org.za: concept note first, then a full application if invited.
Insly is not the funder and charges nothing. Amounts and rules are as published by Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) and were last checked 15 Sept 2026; confirm on their site before applying. No legitimate funder charges an application fee.
