AmaZulu Lodge is a recently built top accommodation located in the village of St Lucia,the gateway to iSimangaliso Wetland Park (the Greater St Lucia wetland park). The region is also known as the Elephantcoast which is 280 km of unspoilt coastline on the Indian ocean, stretching from St Lucia to the border of Mozambique.
Treat yourself to traditional home cooking, or make use of the equipped communal kitchen and cater for yourself. Enjoy leisurely walks while viewing the rich bird live and game of the area. We are only 20 minutes away from the Hluhluwe/Umfolozi Game Reserve and various exciting activities can be organized in the area. The Hluhluwe River Flood Plain is one of the only areas in the whole of South Africa where Yellow throated, Pink throated and Orange throated Long claw species can be seen together. The floodplain houses thousands of migrant water birds, as well as ducks, egrets etc. Three east coast endemic birds can be found in the area namely, Rudds Apalis, Pink throated Twin spot, Lemon breasted Canary. This is a major attraction not only for local birders, but for overseas birders who travel to destinations where there is a likelihood of seeing endemic species. Hluhluwe is also home to some very special birds like Green Coucal, Southern Banded Snake Eagle, Secretary bird, Black winged Plovers and Honey Bussard. Bonamanzi is stronghold for the rare African Broadbill. This little bird is easy to see at Bonamanzi, and is known to breed in the park. It is known in South Africa from only two other rather tenuous sites, and is only known to be present in good numbers in Bonamanzi, Mkuze, Ndumo, etc.
This superb up-market bed & breakfast lodge sleeps 12 people in 6 beautifully appointed double rooms with en-suite bathrooms (shower & bath). All the rooms and bathrooms have under-floor heating for those chilly winter nights. Upstairs there is a large lounge area with TV, DSTV & DVD player. Each bedroom has tea and coffee making facilities. Breakfast is served downstairs in the dining room. Lunch and Dinner are available daily and bookings are essential. This cozy little thatch cottage has three en-suite bedrooms sleeping 6 in total. There is under-floor heating throughout. Otter's Den is fully equipped for self-catering with open plan lounge/dining/kitchen and has gas/electric stove, microwave, dishwasher, washing machine and fridge/freezer.
The African Ivory Route was established with the adventure traveler in mind. A selection of unique and off the beaten track destinations were therefore a more important consideration than ease of access. Access to some of the camps is adventurous and may require 4 wheel drive vehicles while others can be conveniently assessed with an ordinary vehicle.
The whole area has a fascinating and multi-faceted history. There are numerous interesting and unusual places to visit and in doing so, you can experience our culture and heritage. The cultural, economic and military history of the area is depicted in the Talana Museum, on the outskirts of Dundee. A number of gracious old homes in the towns and on nearby farms have been converted into tourist accommodation. Hotels, guest lodges, self-catering cottages and caravan parks offer visitors a wide range of excellent quality accommodation. The area is home to a number of skilled crafts people. Pottery, wood work, hand knotted carpets, woven grass baskets, Zulu beadwork, are all produced here and artists and crafts people can be seen at work in their own environment. Currently the main industry is agriculture. The main farming activity is cattle ranching and local livestock sales are among the most lucrative in KwaZulu Natal. Sheep, dairy and crop farming also form part of the agricultural enterprise. The mining of coal, once the primary industry of northern KwaZulu Natal, has been overtaken by agriculture. It nevertheless will continue to contribute to the economy of the region well into the future. The history of coal mining is graphically depicted in true to life exhibits at Talana Museum.
