The Spaza Shop Support Fund was set up after the 2024 food-safety crisis to help South African-owned spaza shops register, comply with municipal and health rules, and restock. Support is a blend of grant and loan aimed at stock, fridges and shelving, point-of-sale equipment, and the costs of getting compliant.
Shops must be registered on the municipal spaza register and on DSBDConnect, the department's geo-mapping platform, before funding is considered. Applications go through SEDFA; the NEF administers part of the fund for larger township retailers.
Who qualifies
South African citizen owning a spaza or township food retail business; registered with the municipality and on DSBDConnect; tax compliant (or in the process, with help from the programme).
